Block Printing

Ancient hand-stamping technique using carved wooden blocks — each piece carries natural variation and artisan character.

Block printing is one of the oldest textile decoration techniques in the world, with documented practice dating to 12th-century India. Skilled artisans carve intricate patterns into wooden blocks, which are then dipped in dye and hand-stamped onto fabric in repeating sequences. Every Work+Shelter block-printed piece is made by hand, giving each item a uniquely individual quality.

The Process

A pattern is hand-carved into a wooden block (teak or sheesham wood are common choices)

The block is dipped into a dye tray to load the carved surface evenly

The artisan hand-stamps the block onto the fabric with firm, even pressure

The block is re-inked and repositioned for the next repeat, guided by registration pins

The fabric is left to dry, then fixed with a steam or chemical process to set the dye

Ideal Fabrics

Block printing works best on natural, absorbent fibers that accept water-based dyes readily:

Cotton — most common substrate; accepts dye evenly
Linen — slightly coarser texture gives print a rustic, organic character
Silk — produces very fine detail and jewel-like color depth

Fabric Compatibility

Synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon, acrylic) do not absorb traditional block-printing dyes and are not suitable for this technique.

Distinctive Qualities

Because every impression is made by hand, slight variations in ink density, alignment, and edge sharpness are expected and celebrated as hallmarks of authentic artisan production. No two pieces are identical.
