Sampling is where a product either gets built or gets stuck. Brands that treat the sample round as a quick "check it looks right" step discover the hard way that every revision has a cost in time and trust. This pillar is the pipeline: what each sample stage is for, how to run the round efficiently, and the mistakes that turn a 4-week sampling phase into a 12-week one.
The four stages of sampling
- Proto sample — the first physical translation of your tech pack. Purpose: confirm proportions, construction, and whether the fabric you spec'd actually behaves the way the drawing suggests. Expect 1-2 rounds.
- Fit sample — the garment on a real body (or dress form). Purpose: measurements, ease, movement. This is where most brands spend their revision budget, and it's where the fit is won or lost.
- Pre-production (PP) sample — made on the production line with production methods, machines and finishing, not the sample room. Purpose: prove the bulk process produces the approved result before you pay for 500 units.
- Shipment / top-of-production sample — taken from the first pieces off the bulk line. Purpose: the physical reference your QC standard and your customer both sign off against.
The realistic timeline
Proto to approved PP sample is typically 4-8 weeks, depending on fabric availability and how clean your tech pack is. Add 2-3 weeks per revision round — which is why brands who iterate on the fit sample six times are really adding months, not days.
Why sampling eats a season
Three causes, in order of frequency: an incomplete tech pack (the factory fills in your gaps with guesses, and you pay for the re-do), unclear approval authority (three people give three different fits), and fabric lead time (custom-dyed or mill-minimum fabrics can add 3-4 weeks before a single sample exists).
