Sustainable packaging is one of the few sustainability moves that's cheap, visible, and genuinely appreciated by customers. It's also a classic place for brands to make claims that don't survive inspection. Here's what's real at bulk.
What the factory can actually deliver
Almost every serious apparel factory can supply, at bulk:
- Recycled-content polybags (rPE or rLDPE) — the single biggest packaging item for apparel, and the easiest sustainability win. Confirm the recycled percentage on the spec.
- FSC-certified hangtag cards and boxes — paper products with verifiable chain-of-custody. Standard and cheap.
- Paper tape instead of plastic tape — trivial per-unit cost, easy to switch.
- Compostable mailers — increasingly available, though "compostable" requires industrial composting infrastructure most consumers don't have, so the claim deserves care.
- Reduced packaging — the genuinely greenest option. Fewer polybags per unit, collapsible cartons, no individual tissue. Often costs less, not more.
The honest claims
- "Recycled packaging" — verifiable if the recycled percentage is on the spec sheet.
- "FSC-certified cards" — verifiable via the FSC chain-of-custody certificate.
- "Plastic-free" — a claim someone will check. Audit every component, and note that a recycled polybag is still plastic.
- "Compostable" — technically true only under industrial conditions; overstating it is a greenwashing risk.
The expensive mistake
Packaging is a line item on the factory quote, and it's re-quoted per style. Deciding on polybag type, hangtag card stock, and mailer spec during sampling costs nothing. Changing it after the bulk PO is placed triggers a re-quote on the entire run and — worse — a packaging lead time you didn't plan for.
Frequently asked questions about sustainable packaging
Is sustainable packaging much more expensive?
At bulk volumes, recycled polybags, FSC-certified cards and paper tape typically add pennies per unit, not dollars. The expensive mistake isn't the sustainable option — it's changing the packaging spec after the PO is placed, which re-quotes the whole run.
Can I claim "plastic-free packaging"?
Only if every component of your packaging is actually plastic-free — polybag, tape, hangtag card, mailer. A recycled polybag is still a plastic bag. If you're making the claim, audit every component, because "plastic-free" on a product with a polybag is a claim someone will check.
Should I worry about packaging for e-commerce vs retail?
Yes — they're different specs. Retail packaging (polybag per unit, brand hangtag) is set by the factory; e-commerce mailers and any inserts are set by you at fulfillment. Decide both before bulk so nothing gets re-quoted.
